Yesterday, I heard a prayer that said, in part: “O God, mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace, that we, running to obtain thy promises, may be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure.”
The image of God’s people “running to obtain” his promises is wonderful, powerful, and unfortunately, countercultural. I’m not sure that we find ourselves running to obtain God’s promises very often.
We wait on them. We hope to run across them when we read Holy Scripture. But run after those promises? Not so much. We’re too busy running to obtain all sorts of other things.
This is a prayer to pray every day. It’s an image to hold in our hearts from one day to the next.
It’s the kind of running that will keep us in spiritual shape and make us partakers of heavenly treasure.
